This vertical laptop stand is a remix on Sandbergs "MacBook Aluminium Unibody Vertical Stand" (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:146107)
I added an .AI file for anyone that wants to make or recreate their own.
I needed a simple vertical stand for my laptop in my new desk setup.
While I like 3D printing as a technique to fabricate my own gadgets I found that for this specific gadget it was too time consuming. Making a simple 3D model of the original would take anywhere between 1 tot 3 hours depending on the settings. By using a lasercutter I was able to get this process down to 20 minutes.
The final product will have the following dimensions:
It will fit a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina
(I'd love to know what other models it fits with my design or what you had to adjust in the design)
In my prototype the most obvious problem were the rounded corners on the bottom. This made the stand wobbly. It was also a little short with made it easy for a bigger laptop (17") to slide of when not placed exactly in the middle.
Settings on Trotec Speedy 300 Laser cutter:
Engraving: Power 20 / Speed 100 / PPI 500 / Z-Axis 3mm
Cutting: Power 100 / Speed 10 / PPI 1000 / Z-Axis 3mm
The final version was cut out of Perspex, a brand of polymethyl meth-acrylate
