Model spacecraft designed using the Astrobiobound lesson from NASA

In the lesson students model the engineering process by designing a space mission to search for life in the solar system. They first choose a target (Mars, Enceladus, Europa, or Titan) and a mission type (flyby, orbiter, stationary or mobile lander). Then they choose the components for their spacecraft, limited by money, weight, and power.

We added a 3D component by having the students make a model of the spacecraft they designed. Some of these are hard to print due to thin parts (communication dishes, robot arms) and need support. The year ended before we could optimize these for printing.

Lesson Plan and Activity

In the lesson students model the engineering process by designing a space mission to search for life in the solar system.

  1. Download the lesson plan from NASA http://nai.nasa.gov/education-and-outreach/astrobiobound-the-search-for-life-in-the-solar-system/

  2. Print out the materials - planning board, cards, etc.
