Hexagons were used to cover the surface of bowl_612.stl. Hexagons cannot uniformly cover a sphere and there are faults in the pattern. A close look shows small holes, kites etc., surrounded by 5 hexagons. There are 12 such faults over the sphere; they occur at positions that approximate the vertices of an icosahedron or the faces of a dodecahedron. Five such "faults" are visible on bowl_612.stl - an image of one is below. The Voronoi image, see the table of solutions referenced above, shows a similar effect.
