Summary

Functional 3D-printable model of the toroidal magnet system of the ATLAS detector at CERN.

Notes:

Total printing time to print all the pieces around 58h, though it can probably be quicker with different printing settings.

Printed with PLA with a noozle size = 0.4mm. Using an estimated 42m / 288g of PLA. Details of how it was printed (files with more details in Thing Files):

Print 8 CoilFrame.stl (1 or 2 at a time):

  • Brim (line ammount = 10)
  • Support structure everywhere
  • Solid layer (Bottom/Top) thickness = 0.3mm
  • Print speed = 60 mm/s
  • Infill worked even with 5%

Print 16 InnerStrut.stl (4 at a time):

  • Brim (line ammount = 10)
  • Support structure everywhere
  • Solid layer (Bottom/Top) thickness = 0.8mm
  • Print speed = 30 mm/s

Print 16 OuterStrut.stl (4 at a time):

  • Brim (line ammount = 10)
  • No support structure
  • Solid layer (Bottom/Top) thickness = 0.8mm
  • Print speed = 30 mm/s

Print 4 Foot.stl (1 at a time):

  • Brim (line ammount = 10)
  • Support structure everywhere (angle = 60°)
  • Solid layer (Bottom/Top) thickness = 0.8mm
  • Print speed = 30 mm/s

How I Designed This

Designed using FreeCAD, roughly in a scale 1:100 to the real detector.
