Hello,
would you mind sharing the original design files?
I have some existing spools with different sizes which would not fit the holder as-is, and I'd like to adapt it to fit them.
I'll share the results here of course :)

Yes, I have seen similar designs with that spacer, but I think a simple metal washer maybe it's better, because is smoother. Thanks for the info, I'll put some in the final build.

I had exactly the same problem of the original maker, and came across this item; I am currently finishing building one (one spool still to print), and I have to say it's very brilliantly designed: the spool even has a notch in the inside to hold the cable while it's threaded. Without it's almost impossible to wind it up the spool.
Since this is one of my first prints I struggled a little with my printer settings to get a decent result on the spools (must set to maximum density to get it good looking and some warping problems with the lateral stands), and will post photos when I'm done.
Some little suggestions:

  • I'd modify the spools with some holes to use less material and speed up the printing, maybe remixing this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:435802;
  • Since I have 8 cables I'm planning to double it up, simply by building one more support and drilling a pass thru hole in the central one, maybe this could be added as a standard piece.

Thank you very much to the original maker.

Customizeable Cable Spool Organizer

Actually, due to the nature of FDM 3D-printing, making holes like that not only makes the print take longer time, but it uses more material, since it will need to print perimeters for all those holes.

I could perhaps make it customizable to hold more/less than 4 cables!

You are probably right, I am new to 3D printing so forgive me...
The customization needs to be made only for the cable guide, and maybe to create a central stand, because I believe it would move too much with too many spoils.
Another development could be to make it double decked. That is 2 rows of spoils one on top of the other, so it takes up less space on the desk. This could be done maybe simply mirroring the lower part of the support.

Or just make two of these ;)

I*ve actually noticed that the spools have a lot of friction between them, so when you unwind one, the neighbouring ones tend to move too. It's kind of hard to modify the spools for this, so I'm thinking of creating a simple small "disk" that can be inserted between the spools for minimal friction. I can create something like that real quick.

Customizeable Cable Spool Organizer

Did you make new spools at the end?? Don't know measures of the spool to make the customizable ones.
