Summary

A working model of a planetary gear set. This model also allows the gear set to be exploded which gives a better view of the internals. This is accomplished by pulling the ring and sun apart. In its compressed or exploded form, the gear set is functional.

The ratios are as follows:
Sun to Carrier: 3.3:1
Carrier to Ring: 0.70:1
Sun to Ring: -2.3:1

Instructions

1)Print all pieces
2)Sand pieces smooth to ensure proper mating and free movement. Extra attention needs to be paid to sanding the Carrier's working surfaces.
3)Tap or thread the small holes in the top of the Carrier for the M3 screws.
4)Press the Carrier onto the shaft inside of the Ring. This press should require a little force in order to keep the Carrier from coming off the end but should telescope smoothly.
5)Add the 3 Planet gears and then the handle.
6)Secure with the M3 screws
7)Press the planet onto the Carrier shaft. Again, the beginning press fit should be tight but loosen up to telescope smoothly.

Printed this on a Replicator 2 this week with the default medium quality settings. Had to sand the carrier down quite a bit to get the planets to fit on and the post in the center of the ring as well.

First time around I actually broke the post off the center of the ring because I hadn't sanded it sufficiently first. That said, now that it's together it's pretty awesome.

Any reason the Ring gear doesn't match the Sun gear or Handle?  It's a slightly smaller diameter and the shape of the grip doesn't match up.

something wong slice the planet gears correct with slic3r. The part looks okat, but the slice ends up with all kinds of weird stuff.

One of the best on Thingiverse. I printed on a Replicator, and the fit is very satisfying. I did spend a bit of time sanding. Even so, I broke the pin on the ring, it is a little weak at the base at 10% infill. Once I realized what little bits to sand down, the second one was much easier to install. I did print the second ring at 50% infill, but it is more important to sand down the locking tabs.

Now I have two, because the first was easy to repair with super glue.

Be prepared for a lot of printing time. The ring itself was about 6 hours on a Replicator at .2mm layer height and 10% infill, with slightly reduced rates. =-O

Thanks Thing-O-Fun

Awesome :) the sun gear didn't turn out great - insufficient cooling made it look a little ugly, but works great :)

Has anyone tried this on a Replicator?

This is really awesome! Any chance we can get source files or at least STEP files? I use Solidworks 2012 if you did it in that.

FLIPPING awesome. I finally get how it works. Your model was perfect. I had to sand just a few burs off to make everything work perfectly. This is probably the best THING I've ever printed.

Thanks!

Nice one! Printed at 100% all parts works great! Thanks Thing-0-fun!

I am having a blast printing this thing. My setup is an ultimaker at 0.1 mm layers and 100 mm/s feed. After scraping of some speed induced surface stings and blobs if fits like a dream straight off the bat! No sanding what so ever. The carrier to planet fix was a wounder to behold. I can't wait to print the last part, the Ring. As it is now it turns and telescopes nice and smooth. The only trouble so far was that the knobs on the Carrier was to big to be able to squeeze it into the Sun, so I carved off half a mm from them and presto :-D

Try Slic3r! Waaay faster than Skienforge or even Cura!

What are you slicing with?

Currently I am slicing with Skeinforge 46 and running Marlin firmware. It takes forever to slice so I hope to try SkeinPyPy next.

All the knobs needed a bit of sanding/carving before allowing the inserts to pass that one crucial time. Please don't break your parts forcing them, remove half a mm and it still locks fine.

At least on my prints, the parts needed quite a bit of sanding to move freely... But the results are well worth it! Awesome thing! Thanks!

It was great to see my 3 and 4 year old boys play with it. I got them to talk on my video ( http://chime.in/user/toybuilder/chime/121492527804276736http://chime.in/user/toybuilde... ), but they were doing a lot of asking and talking about it beforehand!

When you print the Ring, it needs to be real solid. I printed at 25% infill and ended up breaking the main pin... A little ABS glue fixed it up. 100% infill may be a better choice... Thanks for the great Thing!

I would also recommend printing the Ring gear at 100%.  At the 30% I printed mine at, the center pin snapped off easily.

Started printing mine now, yet another one of your designs to sit on my desk and distract visitors from giving me more work. Thanks!

The sun should be color 1; the handle, planets, and carrier should be color 2; and the ring should be color 1 or color 3?

I didn't have another color available so I did mine in only 2 but if you want to do it in 3 to show the individual input/outputs the sun would be 1 the handle, planets and carrier would be 2, and the ring should be 3. You could also do it in 4 to show that the planets rotate on the carrier.
