We are all stealing from each other here... we call it sharing or in modern words: open source

Using an open source project is not steeling. Applying for patents on open source works is, not only is it unethical, but if proven intentional it is a crime punishable by prison time. Makerbot filed patents on works developed by the users of thingiverse and stated that they were planning on using these patents to gain competitive advantage.

That is why I no longer post new materials here.

I don't know how it works where you are, but you are only right if the Makerbot terms and conditions state that users of this site forfeit the rights to uploaded content.

Otherwise, if there is no clause in the T&Cs, then if your personal work is patented by the owner of this site, you can take them to court, and drag your face through the broken glass of the shoddiness of most (if not all) legal systems.

People are going to rip each other off; it's in our nature. If you have an exceedingly good idea, patent it before putting it on here. It's just the way the world works...

The reason I moved my stuff is because it already happened. I am working on a filament identification project with some others. and months after we started Makerbot filled a patent that is almost verbatim the work i had done (subset of my work). After that i had to spend hours collecting documentation that proves my work was public and came before as prior art. In the end the patent will be invalidated (may already be) but it is the attitude that they can steal from the community is wrong.

I have this project up on another place. I am not and will not update or add anything to thingiverse because of their attitude toward IP. There is no excuse for them being evil.

If they are stupid enough to patent something that has an obvious prior art in the open source community....
