This is an adapter that you can combine two rotary encoders and one push button in one splited knob. You can make combinations of what you need to use (one rotary switch with one encoder or two encoders etc.) There are many kinds or rotary switches depending on the detents and the centers they have. With this adapter you can combine the one you need for your application with one encoder and one pushbutton (if you need one).
It is designed for common and cheap parts that you can find anywhere in the market.
One application is for radio control for example. Turning outer knob left-right tunes frequency, inner knob tunes volume and by pressing inner knob, swhiches radio on-off.
It's up to you how you'll use it. You can avoid the button or one rotary if you don't need it.

I made the gears to be matched on encoders and switches with differnet shaft shapes
That's why the hole on the center is circular. To avoid slipping the gear on the shaft you have to glue it with one drop of super glue after you finish the assemply
The base object has some holes on it.
Look at the according image for their use.
They are to tighten separator and back cap.
You can use small bolts and nuts or tireups
I used the tireup from the opposite side just to make the pictures
Especially for the inner shaft, sometimes when turning fast or when being stressed, it tends to jump teeth on gear. This is avoided very easily if you use a tireup like shown. Circle whole base with it. You'll need a long one or two of them connected.
Don't pass it through base (like in picture) but around it.
For better results lubricate.
Don't tighten too much.
Not how I designed it but why...
Sometimes we need some parts that we cannot find it or don't even exist.
For example of you need a Mechanical Dual Concentric Encoder you'll have to pay a lot of money. But if you want a combination of a rotary switch with a specific number of detents and centers, combined with a rotary encoder then... thats for sure you wont find any.
This solves your problem very cheap and easy.
In addition you have the choice to add a button... ;)
Touching parts need lubrication
Lubricate all different parts that touch each other.
Create your own knobs
After nonstruction you need to create your own knobs.
That's the easy part. Both shafts are circular... ;)
