Summary

IMPORTANT UPDATE: This model is prone to overheating in its current state. For anybody making this, I recommend avoiding hot glue, and instead using super glue or some other non-heat-sensitive bonding agent. I also recommend removing the lid if you intend to leave the lamp on for longer than 15 minutes (right now the lid cuts off circulation and creates a small LED powered oven). I am in the process of redesigning the lid/lamp body to accommodate for this issue. While I am at it, I will also look into figuring out how to make the lamp spin.

Update 2: I have finished designing version 2.0, and am currently in the process of printing. If all goes well, the new design should be up by the end of the month.

Version2: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2235504

This lamp holds and displays lithophane tiles. Each of the 4 sides can hold 75x150mm worth of lithophanes. You can get creative with that, but I only printed 3 easy to work with sizes, which were 75x50, 75x75, and 75x100. Feel free to mix and match, as the tiles are easy to move around and replace.

In the finished picture above I have one side with the lithophane tiles turned out, and one with them turned in. The turned in side was a fair bit less detailed, but I would wager that tweaking the settings when printing could remedy that.

I used Cura to create the lithophanes and the settings I used were:

  • Height: 4mm
  • Base: 0.6mm
  • Width: 75mm
  • Depth: (anything <= 150mm)
  • Darker is higher
  • No smoothing

The LEDs I used were these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LXX3AP4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For more information, I wrote up a quick and messy blog about it here: http://walker-tech-studio.tumblr.com/tagged/lithophane

If I left anything out, let me know!
