Summary

Portraits of NASA mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson in bas relief on the Friendship 7 capsule. The story of these African-American women’s pivotal role in the first orbit of the Earth by an American is told in the book and movie Hidden Figures.

The model is easily recognizable as a space capsule but only when it is lit from inside do these ‘hidden figures’ fully reveal themselves. This model symbolizes the invisible but vital contribution African-American women made to the early space program.
There are three version of this model.
v1 One piece model of Friendship 7 with portraits in bas relief on exterior.
v2 Two piece model of Friendship 7 with portraits in bas relief on exterior.
v3 Two piece model of Friendship 7 with portraits engraved from interior.

The appearance of the portraits with backlight (lithophane) depends on a variety of factors including scale factor, slicing settings, filament opacity and light source. Experimentation and test prints are required. These models are suitable for remixing for a variety of projects. Example photos are from the v2 model scaled at 60% for use as a nightlight.

This model would not have been possible without the conversion of the NASA Friendship 7 3D model to STL by my good friend @Zheng3_Jim http://zheng3.com/

It's a great idea. But as we recently lost John Glenn, perhaps a relief of John on this capsule, which was indeed his.

Perfect for a starwars fan yoda picture or Luke hmmmm

Genius! Without question this is one of the most beautiful things I've seen here!

Can any image be placed inside the item?

What would be some good slicer settings to use with S3D? I have 1.75mm PLA and a 0.4mm nozzle.

Start with what you normally use but before you set your printer in motion, inspect the GCODE file using some sort of visualiser, layer by layer to make sure that you have enough plastic in the areas where the faces begin and end. You need an infill setting which will give you more or less solid layers at this point. In addition to infill, you may need to adjust width over height settings to ensure that the body of the model isn't hollow - that your slicer is able to fill the gaps between the outer and inner wall.
It is all about experimentation - as said, use a visualiser program to view the GCODE before you start printing otherwise you could end up with a lot of waste although saying that the models will print quite well with standard settings. (V3 gives better results than V2 in my view).

How did you transfer the image and put it on the object with out distortion?

Thanks for the share..wonderful model!

Interesting application of a lithophane. I have been using Ransoms photo to mesh software to make mine .what application did you use to create the shape of the rocket......

Outstanding! Thanks so much for sharing for those so deserving. Headed to the printer right now. Priceless!

Great mashup of using lithopane for the portrait on a 3d printed space capsule and doubles as a light. Very Cool!

Congratulations, it's very beautiful.
What software did you use to make the 3D model?

This is awesome! I saw the movie last weekend, it was amazing!

This is one of the coolest things I've seen on thingiverse to-date. Awesome work

Awesome model! How did you vary the wall thickness to produce the image?

Thank you for sharing this model. It was such an eye opening film.

This design is simply brilliant
