X-Carve dust collector
There are quite a few dust collectors for the X-Carve both on Thingiverse and other places. I’ve found most of these too complicated or too bulky. I wanted something that is small yet effective. This is the design I decided was the best for me.
The collector is mounted on the X-carriage, thus not following the movements in Z direction up and down. This means that brushes are not necessary, but it needs a somewhat flat surface on the stock that is being carved. In other words, sheet material is best, that’s what I mostly use.
You will need the following 3d printed parts:
1 Dust collector bottom
1 Dust collector lid
2 Pipe holder X-carriage
2 Tightening knob
You will also need the following:
2 M4 30mm screws, the heads must be grinded so that they fit inside the tightening knobs
2 M4 washers
2 M4 nuts
4 M4 10mm screws
3 tiny screws to fix the pipe to the Dust collector lid
1 35 mm pipe, wall thickness 1mm, length 200mm
You will also need a M4 tap to create the threads in the X-carriage for the pipe holder.
Assembly and mounting:
Glue the 2 pieces, lid and bottom, together.
Mount the pipe holders with double sided tape to the X-carriage. They must be mounted flush with the left edge of the carriage, and flush with the upper and lower edges of the carriage. Drill the holes and make the threads. Mount the holders in place with the 4 10 mm screws
Now it is time to mount the pipe to the collector. Drill 3 equally distant holes close to one end of the pipe, big enough for the tiny screws you’ve selected. Make holes in the sleeve of the collector for the screws, do not mount the pipe yet.
Place the pipe in the holders and mount the collector with the tiny screws
Insert the nut in the pipe holders. insert the 30 mm screws in the tightening knobs. And put the washers in place. Now screw the tightening knobs into the pipe holders.
If you are using homing switches you might have to move the X-carriage stop a little bit to the right.
When using the dust collector, you must have it at least 3-5 mm above the surface, if lower you reduce the airflow and the efficiency of the collector.
You are done, HAPPY DUST FREE CARVING!
If you find my design useful please give me a TIP
How to use it:
- Swing the collector to the left side.
- Mount the router bit.
- Set Z-zero position and XY position
- Jog the Z axis up so the collector can swing under the router bit
- Center the collector under the router bit and adjust the level over your material 3-5 mm.
- Tighten the knobs so the collector is fixed.
- Start the carving.
Print with ABS (prefered) and PLA
Print with at least 3 perimeters shells and 3 top and bottom layers
Supports only needed for pipe holder and tightening knob.
