Simplify3D allows you to customize its virtual print bed with your own STL file. Use this model to show a ghosted version of your Prusa i3 MK2 bed. It is a nice, intuitive indicator of model scale as you plan out your print.
MacOS Prep: (PC users go here)
- Download the STL on this page
- Open a Mac Finder window and select "View > Show View Options" from the menu
- Click the "Show Library Folder" checkbox
- Go to /Users//Library/Application Support/Simplify3d/S3d-Software/
- Place a copy of the STL there
To install the STL model in Simplify3d:
- In Simplify3D, select "Simplify3D > Preferences... > Machine" and "Add" the STL in the "Printer Models" section
- Click "OK"
To preserve your model between sessions:
- In Simplify3D, select "File > Export FFF profile"
- Select the "Prusa Research Original Prusa i3 MK2" profile that was created when you selected your printer on your initial Simplify3D run
- Save it to your Desktop
- Open it with a text editor and find these lines:
- Change them to this:
- Change the "name" in the second line to "Prusa Research Original Prusa i3 MK2 (Bed)"
- Save the file
- In Simplify3D, "File > Import FFF profile" and select the FFF file on your desktop that you just edited, this will create a new "Prusa Research Original Prusa i3 MK2 (Bed)" profile with the pointer to the STL and a flag that says to use it
That should be it. When you open a new window, the custom bed model should be there. Make sure there is a process defined and it uses your "Prusa Research Original Prusa i3 MK2 (Bed)" profile. You can delete your original "Prusa Research Original Prusa i3 MK2" profile if you want to streamline things.
Note that if you open a new window with no process defined, you may see a warped version of your model. As soon as you add a process, however, it should snap into place.
The full machine model is nice but has a lot of polygons and may be too much for you or your system when combined with a complicated print object. If so, I have also made "bed-only" and "min" models which you can use in the same way.

- I used a lot of Mark Jurisch's excellent MK2 model that he posted on GrabCAD
- I used MakePrintable.com on some of the parts, which did a great job repairing the complex meshes
- I used SketchUp to pull apart Mark's model into groupable and movable components so I could move them around the model space to line them up precisely with the Simplify3D bed, I also added the coordinates
- The comments on this page helped me figure out what I needed to do in Simplify3D to get this to work
