Summary

Dad's birthday was coming up and I noticed that the word "DAD" kind of looks like glasses on a nose, so came up with the idea to turn the word into a glasses holder.

I made a 2D mockup in Inkscape of the glasses to use as a template for the measurements and luckily enough it fits exactly 40pt text (well 10pt scaled up 4x). Provided original SVG and exported DXF which can be imported into OpenSCAD.

BTW, those aren't my Dad's glasses, they're the only ones I had to hand to model. Hey they're not mine either right?!

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.30mm

Infill:

10%

Notes:

Print it as its laid out for the fewest supports - see slicer screenshot. Basically with the text on the bed not the base on the bed. You could horizontally flip it (text backwards) so the front is touching the bed resulting in the nice shiny side as the front of the text - see the "bad" version.

I printed it pretty low-res/infill as I was going to paint it anyway and wanted to keep print time down to 3 hours.

I used Hatchbox neon green PLA and brown/gold acrylic paint with no primer.

really good design it holds my dads reading glasses perfectly. i would leave a "make" if my sd card reader wasn't broken :(

dude we're literly that family that has reading glasses laying arround everywhere and thanks to this design it will keep all our glasses in one place and it makes a great gift too!

I made another version that says "BAD" instead of "DAD" because it has roughly the same shape and I couldn't think of any other words with A in the middle. Also see the slicer screenshot for how to flip it horizontally so that the front will be the nice shiny side on the bed when printed. If you know someone called "BABS" (barbara) that could work maybe.

glad you like it - could you post a "make" perhaps if you have the time?

Can you a mom please, great design

i don't think MOM would work - the A in DAD is what makes it like a nose and the two D's like eyes.

the scad file is there if you want to try. i tried to make it a customizer but it doesn't really work well. best to download into openscad.
