This is wonderful, thank you for doing this because I just learned a lot about OpenSCAD from reading your code!

I also think your code could provide an improvement over my Mathematica version. In Mathematica, if I don't use the overlap a bit past 360 then the printed model tends to break along the seam. However, this causes the mesh to have some problems where the overlap occurs, and the printed model has a small rough patch in that area. I think in your code you could change 360+step to just 360 and the model would close up without messy overlap, which would improve the model. So cool!

Actually I just printed yours with 360+step (since I didn't want to wait for the OpenSCAD render!) and it works beautifully! No bad seam or rough patch like my model. Great improvement and an exciting method for printing other closed curves in the future.
