Like Robert Ihnatisin, when I saw the British Museum's TableTop Day upload about the game of Ur, my mind immediately went to " I gotta 3D print that". But where I spent my time over-engineering it in my head, Robert just jumped in and made something. So thank you, Robert, for making this a much easier project for me, I was able to focus on another aspect of the game: making it shelf-able.

The changes from Robert's design include:

  • Pips on the dice
  • Better (IMHO) pawns
  • A hinged board that prints all in one piece and has plenty of space inside for component storage
  • Scaled to print on a MP Select mini (100mm^3 build area) so it should print on just about any printer and can be scaled up successfully

The video mentioned that they were playing a simplified rules. So while searching for advanced the rules for the game, and trying to figure out if the different spaces has any meaning, I found a scan from the British Museum's rules that indicates for the advanced game that you need 5 tokens with values 1-5 (with birds that don't mean anything) and some sort of currency. So I further modified the game with pawns that have values on the bottom side of 1-5 and I threw in a diamond token for currency. These elements are optional, but will allow for extended play and there's plenty of room in the board for 40 or so diamond tokens.

No supports should be necessary, and in fact supports can ruin the board so turn them off. Simply print standing up as is and when printing is complete run a blade between the parts to clean out any stringies until it opens easily.

To get the best results on the diamonds, print with transparent or natural filament, 1 shell, 0 infill, and at half the normal speed.

After printing the dice and pawns can have their details filled in with nailpolish and cleaned off with acetone to bring out the details. The board can be taped and spraypainted then wiped off before it dries to add some depth as well.

Is there a way to still buy the rules and the diamond pieces from you?

Is this the small version (do I have to increase size to 140 % to get the real size)?

This is the small version. If you scale it up to 140% you will get a board closer to the size of the original artifact.

Aren't the dice not really random because material is missing on some sides? Wouldn't it be more "exact random" if you only painted them?

"Random" and "dice" rarely actually go together. Even dice you purchase are rarely exactly random. Little imperfections, corners that are too rounded, and a number of other factors add up to true random being a pipe dream.

However, with a 3D printed dice it could be even worse. Forget about the pips, the infill or number of top and bottom layers, number of shells, all add up to there being definite bias in 3D printed dice, but that bias being unpredictable because you don't know who's using what settings. In my experience, printing them 100% infill doesn't help. The more hollow it is, the more fair it tends to be.

Another way to comensate for the randomness is to rotate one dice when you print them so that they both have a different bias. It won't change things, but it will make it harder to predict the bias.

I've been trying to rotate the dice so I'll have on each face but the object isn't cooperating with basic rotation. Is there any way you could put out a set of 4 that are rotated so every face is on the print bed for the set? I know they won't be balanced but this will make it with less bias as you pointed out. The object just isn't cooperating with rotating.

Technically there's only 2 permutations that matter, the rest are just repeats, but for you I'll give the copies a rotation in the Z axis. How I accomplished this was using 3D Builder in Windows 10 and using the "settle" function to get the bottom to lay flat.

Your Pawns have inlay-circles. Yet you havent provided those in your files? Would be best Ur board by far if you could also add inlays to board also...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. There are 6 pawn files, all with 5 pips on top, and variable pips on the bottom.

Where did you find that rule book? I looked over all the ones on board game geek & haven't found any mention of numbered pieces

I did a Google image search for "Royal game of ur" and found a scan of the rule book on dicecollector.com.
