This is great, thanks man!
Have you checked out this guy's software?

Your welcome! Yeah I have seen that video come up but I haven't looked into it yet.

I've printed your parts already, but I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to find the time to get into the software side to try it

you could get quite far generating .svg with Inkscape, extruding them one layer high (0.1 mm) in OpenSCAD, then slicing as usual with Cura, leaving the temperature set to 0.
Or manually editing the gcode files to remove commands to the heaters, since GCode files are just text files after all.

You can search in the gcode for retraction of the extruder (crossing areas that should have no extrusion) and replacing them with commands to raise and lower the Z axis.

Thank you! I will give that a try.

Cura generates gcode with a home, then a lift. At that point you can insert a pause in the file (a pause for 30 seconds?) so you can set the pen to the paper. Cura then moves to the start and changes Z back down to start. You'd remove that descend command (Z0?), so the nozzle won't scrape your drawing. That's the new base line. Cura will emit retraction commands when it wants to move without laying down plastic. You'll edit those to move to a higher Z coordinate, and the following extruder command is your cue to move back to your drawing Z-level.

Thank you this has been so helpful!
