Overview and Background

This is complete braille alphabet database containing files of every letter A-Z. These files contain tactile dots for each individual letter in the alphabet. This compilation of braille letters is not for direct printing. Instead, they are provided for others to incorporate them in their own designs. This way, people can save time on making each individual dot, and have the entire braille alphabet ready to be used in their latest tactile creations. The uses of braille in 3D printing is providing endless possibilities for the future of visual impairment. From creating fun games, reading materials, educational tools, and gadgets for day to day life, 3D printing is making new ways see and feel the world.

Dimensions:

-Each dot is a semi sphere with a radius of 0.635 millimeters.
-The spacing of dots within a letter is 2.54 millimeters (0.1 inches)
-In the spacing of letters within a word, there is a distance of 5.08 millimeters (0.2 inches) between the centers of the last dot of the first letter and the first dot of the second letter.

Braille Printing Tips:

When 3D printing braille, it is best to do it vertically opposed to horizontally. When a printer forms dots on a flat surface, the extruder tends to just plop the plastic in the places of the dots. Thus, the dots come out ugly and rough. When braille is printed vertically however, the dots are made in better layers. As a result, they form better looking and smoother dots.

Watch how to use these files to make words!

Lesson Plan and Activity

These braille dots can be incorporated into many designs to create reading materials, science diagrams, fun games, and tools to aid in the day to day life for visually impaired people. The possibilities of 3D printing braille is endless!
