Am I understanding those drawings correctly? It takes a 3mm rod and then can be held in place by a m3 screw.

Not quite: it does take a 3mm rod, but this will fit under pressure to the universal joint hub. The second drawing is misleading in that it shows other types of couplings using M3 bolts that are actually not part of the universal joint itself.
