An extension for the catch funnel for the Ambient Weather WS-280 tipping bucket rain gauge.
http://www.ambientweather.com/amws2080rg.html. Adapted from the part shown by https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:381187. This version was modified to so it can be inserted into the interior of the funnel (press fit) for an easier and more secure installation. A few drops of super glue is recommended to keep the extension from blowing off in high winds.
This low-cost tipping bucket gauge is very popular with DIY weather stations. However, the catch funnel is very shallow and raindrops can splash out during a heavy downpour - causing an underestimate of precipitation. This 3D-printed extension helps reduce splash-out errors.
The "deep" version provides a full 1.5 inch deep lip - typical of 4" hand-serviced rain gauges used in official weather monitoring networks e.g., http://www.weatheryourway.com/cocorahs/rgcoco.htm
Printed in ABS. Used a 4 mm brim.
Rotate 180 degrees for printing - large end down.
Coat with UV spray
Spray coat the part with Krylon Fusion for Plastic - clear gloss. This will provide UV protection.
The part can press fit into the funnel. However, you may want to add a small amount of glue (a few dots of super-glue) to insure the part does not come off the gauge.
