Print and build went well. The only changes I would like to see is a tighter fit on the inside part. Was a little loud, could be a vibrating fan, so I hot glued the base and next piece together. Also added some rubber pads. Use it as a desk fan.

Here is 70mm EDF version...not good, the EDF has too much noise, even though it blows out a lot of air. Here is the Youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiiHwAOgbU4
So EDF doesn't work, going back to PC fans.

Hi guys, I fly RC airplane and jets. I am going to use a 60mm EDF from a RC F15 jet. After I print out all the parts, I will show everyone the results.

Nice part, I rebuild it, The inner and outer parts were fine, the base was a lot of work to remove support parts. Maybe I should it print in an other position. Some more tips as in the readme would be fine. For the power supply i will build in a socket, so i can use it with a 12V power supply as in the car with 12V battery power. An alternate base with hole for a socket would be a fine enhancement. Thanks for your work and for sharing it

Wow, thanks everyone for your support, I am delighted this desk fan has sparked so much interest, especially considering it was my first ever attempt at 3D CAD. Unfortunately I haven't been as responsive to people's comments and requests as I'd hoped to be, therefore I have uploaded STEP files for the most recent iteration of my desk fan; The fan head is complete, but the120mm fan base still needs some work, such as testing, and holes for the switch and cord; unfortunately I have overwritten my original 70mm fan base design.

i have a 120mm not in use could you upload a version for it ? or maybe make it customize-able using the thingiverse customizor

what type of fan do i need to use? because i used a 12 volt fan but it practically don t do any air.

I've got this all printed out but not sure how to wire the power supply or more accurately what type of power supply will work best? I've got several 12V power supplies from various devices over the years (I'm a tech director of a school) but just about all of them put out 2A or more - the 80mm fan I have says 0.76 A. For all my years in computers I still a little leery of this type of electrical connections - mostly bitter experience! LOL

Will I burn out the fan using a higher amp power supply?

One last question - with a four pin fan would red be the 12v and black the ground? That's the normal configuration as far as I know but thought I'd double check with someone more of an expert than myself.

Yes, the red and black wires are the ones you will use. The others are likely tach feedback and speed control. 12V to the red and ground the black should give you full speed.

The voltage is what really matters with the fan. Your power supply is capable of producing up to 2 amps but if the fan only draws 0.76 amps, then that is all the power supply will need to produce. Putting more voltage than what the fan is designed for will damage it. In theory, you could use a 1000 amp power supply as long as it only produces 12 v and the fan would be fine

CAN I ASK WHAT POSITION MUST I PRINT THE BASE? AND WITH WHAT SUPPORTS?

I printed it upside down with zig zag supports touching build plate only.

The photos are only of my draft print, I’d love to get around to priniting a quality one. Next time I’d only print in regular PLA and paint with a gold paint to help smooth the lines.

This is a great project for me, Robo3d R1+ fairly new to 3D printing and the outer shell is the largest thing I have ever printed. It has been given me terrible trouble. Burned through a kilo of filament with failures from one cause or another. seems it ran larger than the memory space on the Mattercontrol or some stupid thing like that, came in twice to the the pc rebooted. Then, as I had changed hot ends to stainless steel, about halfway through the third hour, I found bubbles of hot burnt plastic interfering with the nozzle... hours later, I tracked it down to a very very small leak coming from above the hot end heater assy between the aluminum cooling assy. apparently when I changed nozzles I tweeted the connection and now there was a leak.

Starting over, running only gcode to get around the computer problem, fixed the printer leak, waited on new filament, made sure the first layers were laying tight on the bed. what else can I do? My printer says it’s a 32 hour build ... looking forward to the end now.

Lots of fine sanding to get around the previously mentioned ridges in the plastic that someone complained about...

Everyone thinks the big secret is in the aerodynamic duct. It also counts, but it does not use a fan for quiet, strong air flow, but turbine. Look at the Dyson videos. Helix3D has published one such thing and has been banned. So a smooth fan does not make the right flow to start air multiplication. There is not enough air and low pressure. So you're better off controlling your PC fan.
Everyone also ignores the importance of aerodynamics in the smoothness of the surface. During printing, grooves are created which, when crossed, slow down the flow of air with micro turbulence. Anyway, the weak airflow is further weakened. (Dyson does not accidentally shine)

Take these into account before wasting plastic.

If I had this blowing away from me would it be sufficient to keep solder fumes out of my face? I've never been in the presence of a bladeless fan so I wasn't sure how much pull it had.

ANY fan blowing away from you is enough, no need for a bladeless one. I use a low KV 120mm and is more than I need

It seems to push more than it pulls, it may not be enough.

Basicially anything small enough to fit through a 6.5mm hole will probably do.

how big would I have to make to fit a 120mm fan?

How about some simple math: 120*100/70= 171,42. go to the slicer, rezise the part for the fan to 171,42% and check the size of the socket...

Not sure, I do intend to make various bases fitting common fan types, I've just been struggling to find the time.

Great design and function. Mine is working great hard-wired. I'm having a hard time finding a switch online. Has anyone found a suitable solution?

How loud is that thing?

I did some research and I bought the Delta AFC0712DB fan. They are a loud fan but it puts out good air volume. The cheap fans put out half the air. Also, the plastic housing amplifies the noise. I got some 'plastic coat' paint and sprayed the inside of the two top pieces. The chemical smell will dissipate in a few days. This makes the fan quieter. I am purchasing some variable speed controllers. To whoever designed this, thanks a bunch.

I upscaled it to 115% to use a 80mm fan it worked perfekt!

Thanks for this! I was just looking to see if anyone had tried one w/ an 80mm fan. Best Buy has an 80mm for less than 7 dollars that I was thinking about trying.

I will try the 80mm with upscale of 115%. Fan I will use is ARCTIC F8. $6.14 on amazon 05/2018.

This is awesome. I don't yet have a 3d printer but am looking to purchase one for projects just like this. If you use a potentiometer control knob instead of a basic on/off switch you would be able to adjust the speed. Great project. You could make these and sell them at craft fairs.

What rating would the potentiometer need to have in order for this to work?

Does it make the fan more silent than itself?

The fan is quieter, but the whooshing of air is louder; so kind of the same, it’s really just for novelty.

Can you scale this to a standard fan size? 80mm or 120mm?

Why don't you just upscale it yourself when slicing it? It's as easy as putting 115 or 171 instead of the 100 scale factor...

I’m actually hoping in the near future to add some various bases suiting different fans.

Please do, this design is rad aside from the small fan size!

This thing looks awesome but a 70mm fan doesnt push hardly any air through this set up. And the base is too short to stack 2 70mm fans. This would be perfect if we had a remixed base that could house a bigger fan or better yet 2 stacked bigger fans. The bladeless houseing parts maxed my Makerselect v2 out otherwise i would just scale everything up.

I'll remix it for you, how about a 120mm fan size tapering up to use this housing?

That would be awesome!~ I was think if it has a 120mm fan that would be perfect, I have already printed two of the fan heads so if we had a base to accommodate the larger fan and maybe another piece that would adapt the existing head to the larger base it would be a perfect design!

Would it be possible to make this without soldering? I have zero experience using a soldering iron or doing electrical work, but I'd love to be able to make this. Suggestions?

Those screw-connectors should work well enough for the wires, though soldering is a good skill to have if you get the chance to learn it (pretty simple to pick up too)

I'm not sure, I guess you'd have to search online to see if you can find a transformer and 75mm fan combo that fit, I'll keep hunting when I get time and will let you know if I find anything.

Mind telling the fan manufacturer and model number, so I can find one with the samekind of airflow...

its a 5400 rpm one, thanks thats What i needed. The one i have is a 3000 rpm so not powerfull enough perhaps.

Print in three bits .. " Cura 3.04 same set as outer tube its great "

Ohh yeah, that is a bit of a disaster. I am using Cura 3.0.4 too. I've attached a screenshot of the orientation of which I printed it and the resolution, I am not sure if that sheds some insight as to what is going on. Perhaps it has something to do with the supports. Have you tried without support? If that failed, then the support settings I used are attached too. Otherwise, I am not entirely sure how to fix the STL file.

I think for 50mm (71,50:100).70=50,05

Oh man, i had this perfectly working AC 120mm fan that would have worked great, but scaling this design, its too big for my built plates, and i really dont wanna try cutting the model....
Im not that good with the current software to make the two offset scales work with ea other,

When I find a moment I might try and make a few different bases for varying sizes of fans, I’d be interested in trying the 120mm too.
