IC3D adapter for 1 1/4 inch dia. dowl

Using a dowl so I can have a screw for a stop so that the the rolls don't slide too far left or right.

I have no idea why IC3D makes their spindle holes so large.. but I wanted to have all the rolls together.

If you do not want to buy the dowel holders as I did you could drill some holes in the this adapter and use it for the end caps as well. You would just need to modify one side to have a slot for the dowel to fall into on one end.

This is based off of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:62826

Please note that there is not a tight fit on the spindle, but this allows either the adapter to rotate or the spindle to rotate around the adapter.. either way there is little resistance when pulling on the filament.

Added images: A few final shots of the working version and it is working great now. I am running the filament from the bottom of the Tupperware through vinyl tubing guides + grommets (very short run through the vinyl tubing down through my fume hood)
No issues so far.. I kept fighting with the filament unwinding down to other rolls. But that was because I was trying to pull it up through a long stretch of vinyl tubing and the extruder motors didn't like it to much.. But now that is no longer an issue!

Standard Spindle size of Electrical wire
IC3D commented here on thingiverse stated that the spindle is the standard size of electrical wire spindles.. That makes sense now..

Hi snowboarder,
Thanks for designing and uploading this adapter! I also like your idea of using a dowel and plastic bin. It's low cost and elegant. The reason why the hole size is 2.05" (52mm) is that it's some metal wire industry standard and so it's an off the shelf size from our local supplier. Also, this is the same as many other spools out there which means there are a lot of spool holders on Thingiverse designed for this size center hole, including all the Makerbot ones.

We really appreciate your business! Let me know if you ever have any quality issues with the filament.

Thanks for the update on that, I was having a lot of trouble with my printer because the holders on the back were much smaller diameter and would over rotate and cause the filament to unwind on the inside of the shaft and it killed one of my prints because the extruder couldn't pull anything. Didn't catch it until 4 layers after... It can also fall off the shaft because the nut needs quite a big washer to make up the diameter.. I guess it all depends on what mounting option is on your particular printer....

I just updated this project and added pictures of the final version... it is working great now with the adapters and I can eaily switch between 4 colors in seconds!

  • Thanks again for the comment.. Hope to buy more colors soon!
