why do you have cork board under your build plate?

The cork insulates the build plate from the aluminum carriage that everything is mounted to. All the heat is directed into the bed. AL is a great conductor of heat (used for heat sinks in fact) so keeping it away from the heating element plate is a good idea. I think on many printers they use a piece "fire blanket" that serves the same purpose. The cork has held up well for a year and a half now!
