how did you go about modeling these scales? is it a sweep along some curves or a set off boolean operations? i'm still trying to wrap my head around modeling something like this or even make it look a little more organic...

Is there a recommended infill that works best?

Would you mind posting say just a single scale with an octagon base or something like that so the layout can be adjusted as needed?

just posted a remix with just a single scale. did it with windows 3D builder

Open the STL file in MeshMixer, and use the Separate Shells command to make them independent objects that can be saved individually.

MeshMixer is free, and an example of doing tis kind of thing is in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9VDKb3W4qA - 5 tips for using MeshMixer, Separate Shells is tip 4.

i would also like that, please and thank you. but the scales arch over the scale next to them, and they probably won't layer well at the seams. it may be better to just go with this and cut it down as needed. but that wastes a lot of filament.
