I wasn't satisfied about the most of the fan covers available on thingiverse, because the finer details aren't optimized for 3D printing. That's why I designed this customizable fan cover, where you are able to use different settings to create your own fan cover.

Check out the second picture for some of the available settings and the 3rd picture to sync the line size of the fan cover with the line width of your slicer. Use the Customizer or OpenSCAD to create your fan cover or use the pre-compiled fan covers as .stl-Files, optimized for 0.48mm line width (0.4mm nozzle).

This is great. I'd like to suggest adding support for a cylinder in the center where the fan hub is.

in the SCAD file the "cover_height_in_millimeter" has no influence.

"cover_height_in_millimeter" is a preset value depending on the "fan_preset" value. To change the height, you have to set the value of "fan_preset" to "custom" (default: 40).
Then all values of the custom section influences the model:

  • cover_size_in_millimeter
  • screw_hole_diameter_in_millimeter
  • screw_hole_distance_in_millimeter
  • cover_height_in_millimeter
  • grill_pattern_height_in_millimeter

Make sure to change all the values to your needs. There are some hints above each parameter.

I would suggest increasing $fn for the circles in the crosshair pattern a bit, for my 120mm fan cover the polygon approximation became quite apparent in the finished print.

The custumizer presents this message and it does not work:
/usr/local/bin/openscad/openscad: error while loading shared libraries: libCGAL.so.10: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This is a known problem and need to be fixed by makerbot soon. In the meantime, you can use OpenSCAD instead. It is free and faster, than the makerbot customizer. And with the latest version OpenSCAD 2018.01.06 (section development snapshot), you can use the built-in customizer. Download: http://www.openscad.org/downloads.html

Amazing! It must have taken you a lot of work. I think you've broken a record: the thingiverse thing with most files :).

Yes, it took a lot of time, but the need seems to be there and I am looking forward to the feedback from the community. Maybe someone is missing a useful feature or has a suggestion for an additional pattern?
