Inspired by some neato cat toys, this is a 3D printable cat fishing rod toy. It has a functional ratchet mechanism with 3D printed spring for clicky reeling action! My cat loves it, and I hope yours will, too. Go catch some cats!
Print at 0.2mm layer height. WinderBase.stl needs some support, everything else shouldn't need any. I used PLA made by Atomic Filament.
For this project, you will need print one of each file, plus an extra PoleGuide if you like. In addition, you will need a 3/16-inch dowel (I cut mine down to about 44cm, but the length is up to you!), super glue, some string, and a cat toy.
Glue the PoleReelMount onto the back of the WinderBase. The alignment notch ensures it stays lined up nicely. Then slide on the Grip, gluing if necessary.
Check that the Release fits freely through the slot in the WinderBase. You may need to sand a little bit to make sure there is minimal resistance.
Gently break free the thin spring piece on the ReleaseCover and install the cover onto the WinderBase. The round post goes through the hole in the Release. The cover should stay put on its own, and if you don't glue it, you can easily replace it if the spring wears out. Now, the Release lever should spring back into place when you press and release it.
Insert the ReelHandlePin into the OuterReel. The base of it should be flush with the inner surface of the reel. Glue it into place.
The ReelHandle snaps into place. After some turning it around on the pin, it should turn nicely.
Now is a good time to tie the end of your string onto the OuterReel. Then, check the fit of the OuterReel with the Inner reel. They should fit together without a gap. Glue the halves together.
Test the fit of the reel in the WinderBase. It should spin freely without too much resistance when the Release is held down. Sand a little if needed.
With the reel spinning nice and free, glue on the ReelCap to keep it from coming out of the WinderBase.
Finally, glue the ReelGuide into place on the PoleReelMount. The PoleGuides fit nice and tight onto my dowl, so I didn't glue them. You may need to do a little sanding if they are too tight. Then, insert the dowel fully into the PoleReelMount, gluing if necessary. Determine how long you want the string to be, cut it, and feed it through the guides. Attach the end of the string to a toy, reel in the line, and go play! The release lever releases the reel so you can let out more line.
