This is one version of the Necker Cube.

The three walls are 1mm thick, and it is a 25.4mm x 25.4mm cube, the center cube is 6.35mm x 6.35mm.

what am i supposed to be seeing?

When you look at it you should see one of three illusions.

As a small cube in front of a larger cube;
As a large cube with a corner cubelet cut out;
As a small cube inside three perpendicular adjoining planes.

The illusion worked well for us. Neat idea! Thanks for posting it.
