Here's similar idea for the Monoprice Select Mini. Needs a quite small holder to fit in the slot; not much clearance on the MPSM. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2025037

MicroSD card removal tool

Nice, I like it!

What is that sd slot even used for. i can't find much talk about it.

You put GCODE files on a micro sd, insert it into the slot, and you can print from the SD card, rather than passing gcode via USB.
If you initiate a print off the SD card using pronterface or repetier host, you can disconnect from the PC once the print has started; if you have an LCD control panel, you don't even need a pc to print.
Printing from a pre-sliced file on the SD card also minimizes errors in your prints, since communication errors and other issues can arise from printing over USB.
Parts that I frequently print, or crucial prints where I want no communication errors or hiccups, I usually print from an SD card.
generally they don't discuss it much on the printrbottalk forums.
There has been much discussion of the benefits of SD card printing on the 3D printer tips google group:

ah thanks mate :D

Need to make one of these soon... do you have pictures of your printrbot up anywhere? I want to see how it looks in blue stain!

Sure do, you can see some pics here:

Be sure to view them full screen (click the little arrows in the upper right hand corner)
these are older images, I've modded the printer a little since these were taken. Still pretty much how it looks though. I used a MInwax rub on finish, works well, but was time consuming (spent a day finishing the panels prior to assembly)

Wow, looks really nice! I'll have to add a splash of color to mine next time I take it apart for repairs.
Nice LCD holder, too!
