Spool holder that's longer and slimmer than the original one to hold different spools

Since Makerbot was out of black white abs, right when I needed more, I ended up ordering spools off of Amazon. The ABS is fine, but the spool that it came on were a different size and wouldn't fit on the holders that came with my makerbot. So I took the one off the back of my makerbot and modeled myself a copy, but with a holder that's longer to hold the spool, and slim enough for the spool to actually get on it.

It's a little over 3.5in long and an inch and a half in diameter.

I've got two versions here - one has the whole holder as a single piece, but you'd have to print with raft support (I haven't tried it that way yet). The other is in 2 pieces so it could be printed without any raft, but you have to glue them together. I used this really awesome superglue that basically melts the abs together, and there's been no indication at all that it might give or break so far, and I've been printing on it for a while now.

I had very similar story to you - got black and white PLA from a different supplier - different spool size (32mm centre hole and 90mm wide).

Made this beastie to accommodate it - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:34043http://www.thingiverse.com/thi...

and I printed mine using a raft/supports - and was happy with the results - so maybe give yours a go in one piece like that too?

I bumped up the infill from 10% to 25 or 30% I think it was - to give it a bit more strength on the high stress bits. Also thickened out the model a bit from the "off the shelf" thickness spool holder.

Makerbot 'M' logo spool holder (for skinny hole + wider spools)
by Nath

I made one without measuring my spool. This ones too big and not long enough for the spool I got from repraper so I'll be making yet another alternative..

You were talking about glue in the last comment thread. The best glue for ABS is just 100% pure Acetone they sell it at homedepot, or at drugstores to take nail polish off..it causes the ABS to melt a bit and then it evaporates. If you take a paint brush and paint a bit on two parts and shove the
m together after about 30 seconds they become one. Acetone is dirt cheap too, it's like $3 for a huge bottle...

What superglue?

Do have problems with the spool being so much wider with the tubes on the back of the replicator?

Oh - and no, I've no problem with spool size being too wide since they're actually less wide than the ones that come from Makerbot. They're longer by over an inch, by so far there's been no actual problem from that.

Loctite Super Glue - Gel Control.

It works wonders. Best super glue I've ever used.
