After a few people have expressed issues with the lid fitting after adding the Smoothers, I checked and it appears that the newer board in Enders now places the connections slightly higher. I do not suggest using this design for newer Ender 3s, but as both of my printers are from what appears to be the "first batch," I have no way of testing new designs.
Redesigned lid to have fan guard/mount as a removable piece that clips into place on the lid. This allows quick access to the control board and internals without removing entire lid. Also makes for a more professional look. I am still doing test prints on the new design so I consider that to be a "work in progress." The original designs without the fan guard/mount cutaway are tested and work fine.
Added a file with two smoother mounts as a few people have indicated that you only need for x and y axis. I installed the third for the z axis mostly as a noise control for the motor when I use z-hop settings for some prints with thin spire like structures.
Recently picked up a Creality Ender 3 and had heard a few people indicate that a set of TL-Smoothers can help with the slight "salmon skin" you get on faster prints. The control box is a tight space but there is just enough room to mount them to the top without needing longer cables.
- Mounting the Smoother boards will require at least six M3x6mm screws.
- The stock, 40mm fan can be mounted but will require slightly longer screws. I used M3x18mm.
- The three stock mounting lid screws will also need to be exchanged for slightly longer versions. I used two M3x12mm screws for the front since I also have a fan shield, and one M3x20mm screw for the back connection that goes directly into the frame.
