Also modding it with a dremel with custom mount, as I have dremel parts and putting them togeter in a case that will have a fan and good ventilation

Im almost done modding for 10mm shaft rods y axis but x and z are 8mm. mainly because its what I have

please let me know what is the pitch of 8 mm trapezoidal lead screw ?

I think the scale is 60 * 60.I could not measure shafts and trapezoidal gears.

Awesome project! I need to get some 8mm acrylic cut and after trying (and failing) to find someone to laser cut it for me I think I'm going to make this instead.

I would like to make a larger version of this for general CNC, but also would like to have the resolution for a pcb mill. Any reason you would think using higher pitch lead-screws might be a bad idea in place of the T8 (2mm pitch) for better accuracy?

Never-mind, upon further research it seems that this standard in rod is pretty common. No need re-inventing the wheel here unless there are accuracy issues down the road.

Could you please list all of the 2020, 8mm threaded rod and 12mm rod required lengths? This would help anyone trying to make this as I only see it written for a fleeting moment in the frame building video. I, as well as others, would like to purchase them precut to the required lengths or in minimal lengths to reduce shipping costs and the potential of bending. Thanks!

Right now the Fusion 360 archive file has the old Z-axis carriage in it. Can you update it with the newer carriage design that includes the clamp?

Hi, i made your diy dremel cnc but my z axis motor is not the same to the all other axis is a .9 step lil bigger the other motor, how can calculate the z,step/mm

Does it require a regulated or unregulated power supply? The suggestion in the description is discontinued :(

It's not bad. For testing purposes it might be great. But my biggest issue with all these 3D printed CNC projects is that they have very low accuracy. For example these steps created by milling. Your 3D model had a smooth edge from top to bottom and this is the biggest weak point of this machine in my opinion. Sure you can switch tools, but you have definitely lost accuracy in the process. I would go so far and say that this thing has a huge inaccuracy despite using trapezoidal threads. For Hobbyists even an inaccuracy of 10µm is huge.

But then again, if you want accuracy, you wouldn't create a mill on a budget. So my argument is kind of invalid now.

Does anyone know how this compares to the MPCNC? It seems like this one has fewer 3D parts but I am curious to know how it compares performance wise.

Can you design a vertical adjustment for the dremel to make taller objects?

Has anyone printed these parts as a kit for sale? I do not have access to a 3D printer.

One question about the control board you used. What was the benefit of using the arduino cnc shield over an equivalent RAMPs + MEGA2560? You could get the same setup, including the stepper drivers for almost the same price. As well as being able to power/control either a laser or spindle from the same board.


Nice! And thanks for sharing f3d file. I'll make some modifications. Is it strong enough to use Smooth rod 8mm? This rod is easy to find in my local store.

You should not use a dremel for the cutting tool. Dremel tools chatter and have bit wobble. I would recommend the quiet cut spindle. Its 300w and you can get a controller for it. It uses ER 11 collets. NOTE: The ER-11 collets have a 1/8" one that works with the dremel bits. To anyone building this thing, make sure you square each axes to 90 degrees with respect to the other axis. Also because I do not have fancy tools I used the level technique to place the Z axis in a near perfect 90 degrees with XY plane. If you do not adjust it it will always cut crooked. I would also add T-track to the waste board so you have a way to clamp things down. This would be a great build to make CNC circuit board cutting tool.
Note: For those of us in the US the power supply wiring (If you are not sure ask an electrician as the author suggested): Ground is Green | N = netural and is usually White | L = Load and is usually Black
On the power supply check the voltage then if its too low you can adjust it using the Pot on it. Most have them.

I have a customized CNC machine I initially purchased then modified it to handle all sorts of things.

That said, what you really want is the Dewalt Dw660. It is a favorite among home router builders, is super inexpensive, and is far cheaper than those two options above.


The general consensus is that while the name implies it is 660w, it is probably closer to 550w-600w.


what software do you use to controle the machine?


Have you tried carving any hard wood? I am planning to build this and wood is the main material I am interested in but I am not sure the machine is stiff enough and the Dremel would be up to the job for something like Oak or Bamboo.
Did anybody try? Alternatively do you think the machine would handle a stronger spindle ?
Just so you know I am not interested in cutting metal.

He did. "z_axis_carriage_v3" is the updated mount, if you print this one you can ignore the .stl labeled "z_axis_carriage".

Can you upload the files for the “Raitool router mount” that you reviewed on YouTube?
Then we can print it first, and remake it in wood/aluminum

Can it mill Aluminum? Have you ever tried?

Personaly not. Check out Facebook group there are some people that successfully milled aluminium on my machine :)

I don't know if this is already answered somewhere, but do you have an approximate cost for how much it is to make? I would love to build one but worried that it might be too expensive with all the required parts.

It depends on where you bought the parts but you should easily make it for less than $300

Hi Nikodem Bartnik,

thank you for sharing. Great work! In the part "spindle carriage" is a small error. The holes for the linear bearings are 22mm instead of 21mm. They have to be 21mm.
Due to the fact that the plastic always shrinks slightly after printing, some fits (12mm holes) are quite tight and need to be drilled. You can avoid this, if you draw all holes 0,2 - 0,3mm bigger as they should be.

I´m waiting for my ordered lead screws and bearings and cant wait to build your maschine. My neighbors will hate me ;-)

To w sumie zależy od ciebie. Możesz zbudować większą bądź mniejszą frezarkę zmieniając długości profili, wałków i śrub. Ja pociąłem to na takie długości:
Profile aluminiowe:
2x 60cm, 4x 30cm
2x 53cm, 2x 31cm, 2x 14cm
Śruby trapezowe:
2x 50cm, 1x27cm, 1x 12cm

Well done for fist intents. However, keep in mind that the larger the machine is the more flex is introduced by nature of having blocks for rails and support, gantry, when made from plastic. The best CNC micro machines are the ones that use metal in all the structure and supporting block components. Plastic filament 3D Printed gantry and blocks are OK fro 3D printing since side loads are minimal ( for example, we are not forcing a cutter to go through a solid material to remove material). One of my first CNC machines I designed and built back in the early 80's for a Dremmel tool, much as you are doing, used machined Delrin blocks as trucks for the linear rails, but also had flex especially in the Z axis, industrial drawer slides with extra roller skate ball bearing guides for extra precision and built over a 2" formica covered table surface, did a much finer job at holding close tolerance. Keep refining it ! consider using the same aluminum channel as your buiulding blocks instead of 3D printed blocks. You will get a much tighter machine.

The description of part 2 says you only need 2400mm for the whole thing, so that one piece should cover it.
UPDATE: If you buy profiles from 80/20 you will need to buy your T-nuts from 80/20 as well. The channels on their profiles are smaller than standard, so they wont take generics.

I have tried it myself, my machine's up and running. A 2440mm extrusion is essentially exactly as much as you'll need to build this to Nik's specifications, just be mindful of the kerf of your blade (I recommend a hand saw or saber saw). When I was done the excess was so small I could fit it in the palm of my hand.

Did you ever think about making an acrylic enclosure for it? That would make it less messy.

Maybe indicate the orientation to print of some of the bigger parts as some may have trouble printing them in other directions

Awesome project! Thanks for sharing it. One possible idea to control the mess would be to use pegboard for your waste board and have a shop vac suck from underneath. Not sure if it would create enough suction, but might be worth a try.

My idea would be a blower tube and vac nozzle on the Dremel tool carriage. blow from one side, vac from the other. Get the waste out of the way of the tool.

Not sure how practical it would be. But its what I will try when I build it.

Have you thought about designing a mount for a flex shaft attachment? It'd reduce the weight the gantry would have to move and be less stressful on the X/Y motors.

as I founded the following informations only in video #2 I repeat hese here :
Aluminum profiles:
2x 60cm long, 4x 30cm long
2x 53cm long, 2x 31cm long, 2x 14cm long

They match perfectly with the printed parts, after solving some misfits on these parts.
Dont forget that you must drill at 5 mm before to make thread M6.

Great design. I'd like to adapt this design to 10 mm shaft, but i don't succeed in fusion 360. How can I modify all shaft holes to 10 mm ? I can't set the dimension directly ?

Look under the Sketches folder (Under Bodies) on the left, go through each one until you find the one you want to edit then double click and then you should be able to end dimensions

Do you know the dimensions of the cutting area both lengthwise and hight?

Nik, do you know what will be the speed of the CNC? Just looking at the videos, it looks pretty slow, but you may have set it to run slow for your first tests.

what tool do you want to use to cut like wood/acrylic? found that the max shank size is 3mm , so what tool is good to cut like acrylic? , hope you can help me with this :) thanks.

I liked this design, so I began to remix it to my needs.
For my first prototype I made use of 8mm rods and 3020 rails (i already own them all), it's simple to back to 12mm...
Implemented advice from 'metzindistries', moving the X coupler on the right and adding a 608ZZ bearing.
Next step was to implement X-Y-Z endstops (optical ones), an arduino+cnc shield box, a power receptacle and supports for 2 cable chains.
I designed an Laser support too (mine is AliExpress 450mW).
I modified Z carriage to let it support various type of tools, you've just to design your own support and screw it on Z carriage; I own an 12000rpm 12VDC motor, so the showed support fits it.

I've almost assembled all stuff, I'm just waiting for 4 5/8mm couplers to complete the mechanical work, then I'll begin the electrical chapter.

nice design, simple to follow and build, but where are the F*ckin endstops for Y and Z mounted? i studied the model for now 2 hours and didn't find a self explanetory place. also you should write in your desciption that the 12mm linear rods should be 2x525 for Y, 2x300 for X and 2x140 for Z.

Pretty AWESOME machine Nik. However I would move motors a little bit outside and hide couplers inside or even outside plastic parts to extend working area not inside.
But it's just Me :P

What tap and drill bit size did you use?

You should upload the Fusion 360 native files. It would make it easier to modify the files.

Just wondering about how long do you cut the 12mm linear rods on the y axis as would buying 500mm rods be ok or should I buy 600mm

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I see a pretty big design flaw in this. The motor coupler as is will stretch under use. You need to put a bearing like a 608zz
the motor coupler should be outside the frame

I learned this the hard way a few years ago
