Does the threaded rod have to be steel? If so, why? Also, I can't find a hardware store that carries 608 bearings.

Hi No it doesn't have to be steel, I would recommend something that doesn't rust though. You do want it to be strong so you can put a bit of pressure on the roller when using it. Using a Galvanised Steel or Stainless Steel rod makes it strong and it wont rust.

For the 608 Bearings, these are skateboard bearings. You can get them online Ebay, Amazon etc. or a Skateboard shop. If you get them online they are very cheap and you don't need any of the real fancy ones for this application.

Can you link where you bought the steel threaded rod from? Will this one work?

Same question for the M8 Nuts.

Hi I guess mine are Metric M8 but you should be able to find something close in Imperial. As long as the thread is good for the rod and nut, you will want the nut to fit tight in the handle where the recess is for the nut. Plus you wouldn't want the rod too loose where it goes through the bearings.

I got mine from Bunnings which is a big hardware store here.
