very cool design, have the parts printed but i'm having a hard time sourcing the variable resistor. was wondering where you got yours?

Hoi kirk
Place this search string into ebay ;-
*10K Ohm 3006 Multiturn Trimming Potentiometer"
and it should throw up a good selection of suppliers.
Good luck with the build...
Regards Gareth

Very glad you've allowed for derivatives :)
Any chance for the source files?

Why do you use a stepper motor and a potentiometer?

Simply put the 28BYJ48 stepper motor is the cheapest on the market ....and gives a 2Kg "pushing force"
The potentiometer is used as a feedback sensor, it measures the position of the servo, you will find them in "All" servos.
I also have a gear motor version here :- http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:317192 which uses the cheapest gear motor on the market.

Linear Servo Actuator (GM) Gear Motor Version

Cool, thanks for sharing your other design with me. I know what the potentiometer is used for, it just seemed a bit redundant to use one with a stepper motor. Now that I think about it though real time position detection is better then theoretical position.
