Summary
This project is also available on prusaprinters.org!
This is a spool for 50-100g 1.75mm filament samples such as the ones included in MakerBox (referral link) subscriptions (it also fits the original zipper bags) ;)
I have also included a spool for 150-200g 1.75mm filaments such as cleaning and high density which tend to be sold in small quantities or larger samples.
Both parts should be printed with the same settings and screwed together tightly.
The design is inspired by the new Prusament filament spools but redesigned from scratch for much smaller size.
There are included holes for one end of the filament (2mm) to help with the initial wrap but should be loose enough to allow the end to slip out when the filament is running out during print.
You can use any of the honeycomb holes on the sides to hold the loose end of the filament when not in use.
Be advised that due to the complicated nature of this design it will take 4-6 hours to print each part!.
Don't be afraid to leave some feedback in the comments or even a humble tip if you're feeling extra generous :D
For 50-100g use:
- Bottom_A
- Top
For 150-200g use:
- Bottom_B
- Top
Changelog:
Bottom_A (50-100g):
v20:
- reduced honeycomb hole spacing (for 0.4mm nozzles)
- cut down print time by ~17%
v14:
- changed placement of filament holes (farther apart) to make printing easier and more reliable
- shortened thread
- removed several honeycomb cutouts which would cause print issues
- rounded external edges
Bottom_B (150-200g):
v4:
- fixed gap between parts when screwed together
v3:
- doubled width of Bottom_A
Top:
v16:
- reduced honeycomb hole spacing (for 0.4mm nozzles)
- cut down print time by ~20%
v15:
- shortened thread
- fixed thread diameter issue (will now match the bottom part)
- rounded external edges

Notes:
Approximate print times of each part:
Bottom_A | ~ 5h21m |
Bottom_B | ~ 7h34m |
Top | ~ 4h9m |
This is a very difficult pattern to print and will take a very long time... Be patient :)
Post-Printing
Depending on your settings and filament the spool may require some post-processing.
At the very least make sure that the internal and external sides of the honeycomb mesh are smooth (use a file or sandpaper) so the filament won't get damaged during unwinding.
