So awesome to see this here. I was starting to get tired of my standard laces on my snowboard boots this season. How has the system held up and are there any parts you may want to tweak, and also if you haven't already you may want to make little grommets for your lace holes so they don't get cut through by the wire.

Hey there, glad to see you like the design! I had been using my first set for about a month on my tennis shoes before one of the units broke. I was working out in the shoes ~5x per week. I haven't dissected the broken one yet but it seems like the part that failed was the springy pawl that ratchets the release mechanism. There are a few parts I wanted to tweak:

  • Release Mechanism / Dial interface: make the hexagon for the release mechanism a little beefier to reduce the chance of it twisting apart along a print layer when you wind up the ratchet

-Pawl: maybe make it a little thicker at the outside teeth and possibly increase its surface area from the top to make it a harder click.

Other than that they have been working pretty well. I definitely will try to switch to some type of nylon lace in the future as the metal wire was beginning to cut into the shoes as you suggested. I tried using these with converse shoes, which already have metal grommets but the friction was too high and they actually work a lot better with the cloth holes on my gym shoes.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and if you have any more questions I will try to monitor this thread closely. If you do ask something and I don't respond feel free to email me at wnelson@mtu.edu
