I created a version of a US 50 states puzzle map to be used as a learning tool with the state names embossed on their reversed sides. The idea is one can try to guess the state name and find the answer by flipping it over. This project has turned out better than expected and has been popular with my family and friends. Each puzzle piece is 3mm thick. Total print time in 5 colors on my Prusa i3 MK3 was around 40 hours. Kudos to TheNewHobbyist for the sketchup file (see remake reference).
I've included STL files for each state as well as one with all 50 states together.
See additional notes in the printer settings below.
You can print either text up (i.e. front faces down) for a smooth top surface or text down. I chose text up / smooth top. The only exception is Hawaii where the islands (front) needs to face upward and the text is facing the printing plate.
For Hawaii I also chose to split the colors for the islands and water (color change at layer at height 1.8mm where the islands start to be printed). This can be done with a free utility like: https://www.prusaprinters.org/color-print/
Default text height for most states is 10mm. No need to print at lower layer height than 0.2mm with a 0.4mm nozzle. The text on the smaller states have a 3mm text height. These could benefit from a smaller nozzle size but 0.4mm is still OK if you go slower on them. States with 3mm text height are:
Rhode Island (R.I.)
