Inspired by Thing-O-Fun's "Functional Differential Gear System" I decided i should make one for my RC car. So i did.

I scaled down the gears from the above mentioned Thing, and designed the rest of the parts in my favourite cad software.

And it works surprisingly well, my car is 4WD so i have two of these in the car right now!


The parts may have some adjustments done to fit the settings of my printer so you might have to do some adjustments of your own to make it fit correctly.

The "Side Gear Axle" is made of 3mm stainless steel.

Other than that check out the exploded view PDF to see how it´s assembled.

I made this as an experiment so you should consider it as beeing such a thing.

By any chance could i buy one of the from you?

We built this differential, but wondering what type of belt you used.

What material did you use? I am sure these gears get hot so I am curious if they melt.

Impressive! I am designing a differential for an RC car competition. I want to make the housing out of plastic, but buy metal gears to increase fatigue life. What CAD software did you use? Can I get your part files so that I can take a closer look at your design?

Thanks! Well your right and it´s my intention to do so but i´m gonna hold that one for a bit though. ;-) I have more stuff coming from my "Open RC" project later...

wow, I seriously cannot wait to have a majorly-3d printable RC car.  So many awesome things could be accomplished.
