I am not sure if an entire sphere is needed for the articulation (mostly just the sides), so could the trunk pieces be oriented 180 degrees (creating a flat on the sphere) and printed in that orientation without supports?

The issue I see with that, is the bottom of the trunk piece would still need support, or specific wall/bottom print order.

are the model tolerances scalable? I want to print at about 75% for a birthday cake topper

One thing you could actually try, if you use Cura, is to set the printer nozzle seting and line width to 0.3 and then you can scale it to 75. You don't have to change the nozzle, and no clue if it works on other slicers. Give it a go and let me know if it works.

Hi, Cura only let's scale down to 90%. Then the leaves and the fittings start to also be too small for printing. You can make it look smaller by priting only every other trunk part and trim the leaves if needed.
