I also built one using an Uno and a stepper driver from Sparkfun. Addionally, I put on an LCD shield and an IR transmitter. Using the LCD shield I can step through a menu that allows me to select the number of steps the turntable will stop at, so, for example, I can have it stop every 10 degrees for 36 different views. The IR fires each time it stops, which trips the shutter on my Nikon camera. So I can just start the process and walk away while it does all the work. My stepper attaches directly to the center of the turntable so no gear was needed.
