This remix is intended to produce a completely usable and reliable cap wrench for removing spin-on oil filters. (currently limiting to 65mm or 74mm 14-fluted variety.)
65mm fits my Prius
74mm fits my RAV4
Thanks to tonycstech for his original design. It, and the discussion about it, gave me lots to begin with and think about!
My version is not tested and ready for use yet!
V0.2 I just reduced the nut size to 99% nominal.
Printing my first test of the 74mm.
If it fits my filter and tools, I may even do an oil change on the RAV4 today and report any success or failure.
V0.3 Added 1mm clearance for filter (duh!)
I was able to force it ([email protected]) into the wrench with a little cracking sound...
3/8" drive fits nicely, but part is too weak to withstand removing the driver...
19 mm nut fits wrench or socket fine.
It may not fit anything, and it may break with first use, lol.
But I will be finishing project as time allows.
Performance testing based on print parameters yet to come.
Initially I'm testing with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.3mm layers for prototypes.
Hatchbox PLA printed at 188 degC.
I'm doing only 25% infill but ensuring all the walls are 3 lines thick before any infill.
That's baseline. I'll test strength this way before making any changes.
Written in OpenSCAD.
Generating the main filter body requires only about 2 lines of code.
Since I'm making it parametric for the Customizer, and with several features,
I've ended up going way beyond that.
It forced me to learn a lot about engineeting specs for nuts, square drive tools and receivers, etc.
Lot's of learning going on in these early projects of mine as a Iseek to move beyond Newbie!
I needed a 65 mm oil cap wrench for my daughter's Prius the other day and did not have one.
I used some water pump pliers instead and got by fine.
But it would've been easier with the right tool.
Granted these are available pretty cheap on line in varying quality.
For now, I'm just going to post what I have.
Look at it. Comment on it. But note well that I have not tested the parts the code generates yet.
There are likely major issues still.
I plan to do careful destructive testing when I have time and make improvements from the results.
Choose a size!
Currently I only enabled 2 sizes in the customizer.
Eventually I may open it to more many more choices.
e.g. height, wall thickness, size of the nut, other filter diameters.
However, if I haven't done this, please feel free to download my code and change the relevant parameters 'til your heart's content.
65mm fits Camry Celica Corolla Prius and lots of Honda, I think
74mm fits my RAV4.
Currently has a drive hole for inserting a 3/8" ratchet or drive bar, as well as a 19 mm hex nut for use with a good 6-pt socket.
There are reinforced bits to use if you just want to take it off with your hands.
I will do torque testing and improve the design later.
Also note, while I've already put some effort in the code to be sure it meets tool manufacture specifications, not all of the clearances are designed in yet, and none of them are tested IRL
