You are working in what I was searching for. I use Adafruit's Rgb color lcd with keypad to build my own dedicated chess computer based on raspbery pi called gavon.

Add the keypad to the case, Study how to attach to the case a speaker, and how to combine the case to be connected to several emergents mini pcs like raspberry, pcduino, pcduino v2... And you have built what people that don't use these devices for looking video are searching for.

Well, the Adafruit Display is communicating with the RPi over the I2C bus, this is GPIO Pin 2 and 3, plus it needs 5v and Ground. The LEDs are for additional status info (whatever you think of). In my project i use it to show some system status info on modules turned on and active etc. I'm using python on the RPi to control it.

Interesting. Can you provide more details one how you are wiring this up? What software are you running? What's the LEDs for?
