I wonder if this (or some near derivative) would be a viable motion platform for say, some desktop CNC device.

In most circumstances we start with a rigid-body model of the mechanism (section 6 in the Compliant Mechanisms book) and make a prototype. We then convert it to a compliant mechanism using the pseudo-rigid-body model (section 7). This process is often referred to as rigid-body replacement (discussed in section 8.1). At this point the mechanism is refined through stress calculations (sections 2 and 3) and prototyping. Appendix E is an especially helpful reference for many pseudo-rigid-body models of various compliant mechanism joints. Hope this helps!
