Could you point me to a tutorial on how to upload the sketch/code on to the serial 7 segment display? I can't even get it on an arduino, I get errors regarding the rotary encoder.

I did not use any tutorial, but there is this short README on the github repository : https://github.com/sparkfun/Serial7SegmentDisplay/tree/master/firmware

You need an FTDI board (like sparkfun FTDI basic or adafruit's FTDI friend boards) connected to CTR/RX/TX/VCC/GND (on the short edge of the Serial 7 Segments Display board) and add the support for this board in the Arduino IDE (see this : https://github.com/sparkfun/Arduino_Boards/ ).

After that, you should be able to select the board in the Tool/Board menu and finally upload the code on the board.
