Contributions of both form and function were considered, among a rescue whistle and a rule, the first design proposals were 3d printed and aspects of use were reviewed and refined. whistle was ruled out for reasons of hygiene and because it would greatly complicate the printing. We worked on the closing system and finally we made printings in different types of 3d printers to validate the manufacturing files.
The result, a keychain - knife with an auxiliary ruler in centimeters in 2 pieces, that can be replicated in any 3d printer and works with commercial "Utility Blades" spare parts.
we hope you enjoy it!
We made printings in different types of printers to validate the files. Works fine with PLA or ABS Standard and Fine settings.
IMPORTAN: Nozzles of 0.35 or less are highly recommended.
MODO Utility blade key ring
The person in charge of developing this project was the designer Maria Fernanda Olmedo, who collaborated with MODO from the conceptual stage of the project, the preparation of tests until the validation and field tests of the final product.
Thus, the first decisions of Design were focused on what kind of tool should it be, different alternatives were explored among which were screwdrivers, flashlights, knives or whistles, all this were analyzed from two priorities, first our users, "motorcyclists and adventure travelers" on the other hand the very origin of the project and its limitations, the fact that the resulting product should be able to be printed by anyone, anywhere in the world, using 3D FDM printing technology and yet continuing to be 100% functional, which led us to eliminate all those functions that required a high mechanical effort to be functional, accessories such as screwdrivers or clamps were discarded.
In case that the resulting product needed some extra component for its function, it should be easily accessible to the user and should require none prior knowledge to be able to assemble and use the product. That latter led to discard flashlight proposals and the decision to develop a keychain knife based on the use of commercial "Utility Blades".
The result, a keychain - knife with auxiliary ruler in centimeters in 2 pieces, that can be replicated in any 3d printer and works with commercial "Utility Blades" spare parts, we hope you enjoy it!
