This is a transformable Megatron figure that prints in just two pieces. No assembly required! It stands over 120mm tall and transforms from tyrannical conqueror to tank. No support material is required to print. This makes cleaning the final product easy, and means you can transform it right off the build plate! Armed with his classic Fusion Cannon, he has sworn vengeance on all Autobots and their Leader, Optimus Prime.
Megatron and his Fusion Cannon are two separate STL files. Despite my best efforts I was unable to integrate the two.
Megatron will need to be oriented with his back to the build plate and scaled by 1000%.
The Fusion Cannon will need to be oriented with its "hooks" facing upwards and scaled by 1000%.
I designed this model so that no support material is needed (I hate support material). I have uploaded all of its individual parts separately for potential remixes. The file for Megatron is Megassembly_Thingiverse.stl and the file for his fusion cannon is FusionCannon_Thingiverse.stl.
If you wish to print the model at another size or resolution, your results may vary but all joint tolerances are 0.4mm so be careful.
All Hail Lord MEGATRON!
After I finished my transforming Optimus Prime, I knew I had to make a Megatron. I learned a lot making Prime and I had a lot of ideas left over floating in my brain about how I could proceed. Unfortunately for all of the "gun alt mode" fans out there, I've always found gun Megatron silly and somewhat dumb, and I think that he is definitely at his best as a tank.
Initially, I planned for his torso to be the tank body and his legs to be the tracks, but after I made some progress on the model I realized that this looked chunky and oddly proportioned. Not acceptable for Lord's Megatron's high standards! I brainstormed new ideas and decided to take inspiration from the G2 design, but I wanted Megatron to look as G1 as possible.
Overall, Megatron has a much more complex transformation than Optimus (relatively) and it was my first time working with ball joints. I probably spent double the amount of time working on Megatron as I did on Optimus (not counting my failed first design). Luckily, my experience working on Optimus made sure that Megatron worked the first time around and not the third time, and I'm happy to have a companion to Optimus in my inventory.
Might see this design sometime in the future as another transformer. I did get pretty far on it in CAD.
