I designed this tool to help me hob a toothed channel in a drive bolt for a wade's extruder. I've printed one, and used it successfully.

Print at 100% infill, clean any plastic fuzz, press two 608 bearings into the channels, clamp in lathe tool holder, insert a bolt, and hob!

I tried my make of this thing (finally) and had a couple of problems:

  1. Note the bottom ball race will be trashed / seized by the swarf from the cutter. Need fully sealed bearings.

  2. The clearance hole for the bolt needs to have clearance! Suggest making the bolt hole in the tool 10 or 12 mm to give good clearance. this would solve 4 below too.

  3. The cutting action pulls the bolt downward, pressing the head into the non moving plastic surface. Suggest a design where the top bearings top surface is exposed, and acts as spinning platform for the bolt head.

  4. There is no clearance behind the hob. The hob is rough when cut so the bolt tends to stick on the tool. Suggest need a bit of clearance.

  5. A nice to have would be the correct distance between bolt head and hob position built into the tool. i don't know if there is a standard distance, but the gears and wades derived extruder i'm trying to build seems to need 25 mm.

hope that helps someone.

Can you hand crank it?

woah, that overhang at the top of the bearing sockets sure makes things interesting!

As you can see in the photos, my machine didn't have any problems with it. YMMV.

I made one... out of wood. My first printer isn't done yet. ' ~ '

I'll post a picture of mine though, if it counts.

Woops, that was me. I wasn't logged in yet.

Certainly it counts!

That's really useful! Thanks. I've been meaning to compare Wade's extruder and my own, or rather, try to compare the pinch wheels with the one I regularly use.

You should start using variables for all values in openscad. That will make the development and customization much easier.

Obviously. I just hacked this together last night. Patches welcome!

Done. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3785http://www.thingiverse.com/thi...

Still not fully parametric, but able to do some fine-tuning with bearing holes and so.

I've pulled in your update.

Looks interesting. I'm pretty sure I follow what you're doing with this, but it'd be great if you've a pic of it in use.

Excellent! Thank you.

Do you have to force the bolt against the male while hobbing or just let them touch each other in locked position? Can you upload a video doing the hobbing?
