I have an early Nixie chess set from Lasermad (http://www.lasermad.com/shop/product/nixie-chessboard-diy-kit-nixies-included/) which is a wonderful art/electronics/game amalgam. It's the kind of thing that you build slowly and carefully without rush.
One issue I had was in the assembly of the nixie tube coils. The pieces that came with my set did not sit well when the bobbin was assembled, meaning that many times as I wound the coil much of the magnet wire would push through the interface between the pieces and goof up the entire winding process.
This got to be frustrating enough that I designed this model as a one-piece substitute for the bobbin assembly.

You will need to build this with soluble support material as the inner surface needs to be pretty smooth.
