I'm going to give this a shot on a Makerbot Replicator (1) with supports and just try to cut out the supports afterwards.

What is the clearance distance you used?

 Probably between .015 and .02 inches.  I'd have to open the file to be sure, but that's typically the range.

Inventor. Original as in CAD files or just the separate parts?

Would it be possible to get the same effect if printed in parts by printers without support material capabilties?

Probably not, unless you come up with a creative way to separate the build layers.
