Great model! Currently printing this in blue nGen and carbonfill.

I've cheated slightly..... I've taken the tri-joint and printed it in two halves 9mm up the body. This gives me a nice flat area to print on and I just glue together afterwards. If anyone wants an stl for this, I didn't redesign it (although meshmixer will do the chop just fine) I just sink the part into the build plate by 9mm, and invert it to do the opposing side.

I'm not sure on screw size yet, but to be honest I may design a new rod with captive nuts and use standard m5 or m4 screws. Or I might just tap the plastic, depends how lazy I'm feeling.

do you mind telling me the size of the socket head screws?

I tried printing this at 75% out of PLA and after 500 layers of the 12t involute gears, one of them broke free from the baseplate and ruined all 3 and many meters of plastic. Not sure how to fix that problem as my print bed won't let me print bigger. Also, The end pieces are all but impossible to print due to the near zero amount that is touching the print bed to hold it in place.

I built this with ABS and it looks and works great. The hex hole in the maingear fits a Phillips head screwdriver attachment for a drill. Pretty interesting this makes a very unique and unusual screwdriver handle which ratchets both ways (screwing in and screws out). Just an adaptation of your cool skewed planatory gear set. i cansend you a video if you like. fvfly

I've just seen your design and, for one find it very interesting, but i also was thinking it could make a very nice looking rotating water fountain driven by water pressure. A few O-rings here and there

Anyway, Cool thing for now, hope either someone will pick up the idea or i have time to do it myself.

Excellent functioning gear. I printed with ABS at 75% scale using an Afinia H479 and assembled the gears with 4-40 x 3/4 in. screws. The gear functions very well! Also printed at 50% scale and assembled with 3-48 x 3/4 in. The gears are too tight to turn efficiently at that scale and have not modified the Tri-joint to improve the tolerance.

Should the outer gears slip/spin on the shaft.

In my case they are so tight, i had to knock them in with a rubber mallet.. I cant believe this is righ, as surely they would have been made as a 1 piece model?

I am wondering if i need to scale them X/Y a little (as per the comments below) to allow the gear to turn on the shaft..

Should the gears spin on the shafts? Or do the screw simply spin?

Very cool design.

I just finished making one and I agree with the other poster in that the connecting rods are too large. I printed mine at 97% in X and Y and 100% in Z and they fit very well and roll nicely on the connecting rods.

All assembled, though, the mechanism is VERY stiff. So stiff that a printed key won't turn it. I can turn it by hand with a 6mm allen wrench, though. I suspect that the 12 tooth gears (the planets) could be printed at 96-97% in X and Y with changes made to the connecting rods as well and it would rotate smoothly and effortlessly.

Can you share the CAD file? I'm interested in printing this on a Stratasys Objet Connex in one build with multiple materials. Thanks.

After printing I found the connecting rod diameter to be a bit large and it was going to take a lot of sanding to get it to fit. I decided to reprint them at 98% X and Y, leaving Z at 100% to hold the length. That worked out well for me. Pictures will be up later this evening. Neat design, thanks...
@ Deckernico I used 3/4" 10-32 Cap screws, it's what I had available and they worked well. I also ran a 10-32 tap down the holes first, but you probably don't need to do that step.

I wish I would have read this comment before I printed mine and then sanded mine down.

Do you have the specs on what screws/bolts we need to finish this? I printed everything but still looking for #10 socket head screw caps, how long do they need to be?

Thanks very much! The images are just renders at the moment. I printed out the prototype, but I only had mustard yellow and an off-blue filament to work with, so it is astoundingly ugly. I'm waiting on an order of filament to get a prettier version printed soon. Cheers!
