Do you like classic video games? Me too!
Do you like to write with a pen? Sure why not?
Do you like reading stuff written in 8 bit font on the side of your pen? DO I EVER! Now you can too! Use the MakerBot Customizer App to customize your very own Retro Font Word Pen! People will be so jealous at meetings when they see this fancy writing instrument!

* UPDATE, Thingiverse's excellent support staff located and fixed the bug preventing the text from being displayed, is now working**

This is my first attempt at a customizable Thing, actually my first attempt at openSCAD period.
Be sure to let me know what you think with comments or suggestions!

Use the customizer app to design your own pen.
You have some controls over font size and spacing. And what it says of course...

When you're done, download it and print it out!

The inside of your pen may have some dropped threads you will need to clean up. I used a piece of coat hanger to scratch and grind them out.

Then simply take any old pen you have laying around your house and steal the ink tube and ball point. Slide it in and BAM. Coolest pen ever!

Example uses:
Put your name!
Use a friends name, and print them their own custom pen as an interesting and original gift!
Put your company name, and give out these pens as a promotional gift.

Please note, this is still a thing in progress, I am currently working on adding a Pen-Cap and a few other refinements

Hey Brandon
So I made heaps of these for guys at work. They are awesome, but there are a few issues which I've resolved.

  • This doesn't do anything with names with an 'i'. So I modified the Scad to easily adopt this - Code is very easy to modify that builds a bridge for names with an 'i" and you just slide it across - download scad and read comments.
  • The tip seems to have issues printing (I had a look through all the makes, and saw the same problems, with the cylinder not bridging properly, and either collapsing or breaking. So I've modified it also in the Scad.

Remix link is below - initial design is fantastic thank you! Just wanted to improve it a touch.

Retro Pen - With "i" and Better Tip
by oohsam

Hopefully someone can help! I've printed a few of these fine... but for some reason, now they are printing wonky. The pen doesn't slide in because the filament is not going all the way from one side to the other when filling in the top part of the pen. I was going to attach a picture but I guess you can't. I have a Davinci 1.0 with the latest repetier. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks.

great fun, though a little uncomfy to actually write with a tri side or more rounded version would be great. I also struggled to find pens inners to fit.
This said I love them and want to print as rewards for me class

Thanks so much for sharing

Just an idea for another version... how about making the text center at the back of the pen instead of the front, so it's easier to write with?

It is printing as I type this comment ... which is why I have time :-)

Anyhow, the placement of the cap on the model. Can you move it for your next version so it is by the side? The current layout limits the size/length of the actual pen for a given print platform, as the cap is extending it. If it is by the side, the pen can be longer or be printed on a short platform. (Mine is a round/delta, so placing it "diagonally" is not a solution)

Hi, nice design! Very very nice. You might be interested in this similar thing that I designed, for pencils. Different font, and can specify spacing between each character, as characters kinda need to be stuck together. Probably even more uncomfortable to write with! :)

Customizable TEXT pencil holder

which app did you design this?

Found out bazic ball points work with a little reaming. Anyways other peeps should report back their experiences

ehh meant big * lol

ehhh any pens you got lying around tried paper mate no dice diameter too pig and someone point me to verified working pen

Is there any way to incorporate a symbol into the print after the name, such as a peace symbol or something like that?

The only relatively easy way I can think of would be to leave space in the text where you want the symbol to go, and combine that symbol with the .STL file in another program?

Hi, Very, very new at 3d printing, downloaded this and printed without any glitch. Awesome.

Where would I get the ballpoint inserts/cartridges?

I just took them from pens I had laying around. The kind of pen you get at a hotel or wherever.

That looks very uncomfortable.

Surprisingly its not bad at all

This is very neat!

I wonder if there might be a way to reverse the text direction, for those of us who write with the other hand.

Thats a good idea, i'll see what I can do.

some chars with a dot will hang in the air....but cool script

My first openscad attempt was just a box with a hole.

Lol i misread that.

did you use the customizer or download the SCAD file? You may need to download the latest version of openSCAD. We experienced that problem when I first uploaded it.

Very cool! It's interesting to compare to my http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17383http://www.thingiverse.com/thi..., which is a bit different - it's designed to fit specific pen inserts. Hmm, perhaps I should wire it up to Customizer!

Parametric Pen
by laird

Customizer has been fixed and the pens should work now. (this script was using a new-ish openscad function (search) so we had to upgrade what was running on the server)

Thanks Guys! Great work!

Yeah, sorry about that. There is a glitch in the customizer side of things. I have opened up a ticket with thingiverse support. Since we ARE able to preview the file correctly. Just the final STL doesn't get generated properly for some reason.
I assure you the SCAD script does work if you download it and run it yourself.
However check back later tonight, as I will be finalizing a few things such as a pen-cap for it.
If you do print end up printing one out on your own, please still post a copy of it.

Hey, I tried to use the customizer with this but it just generates a blank pen.
