For the updated version 2b of this thing, follow this link:

This second gear toy has undergone some evolution and careful revision by yours truly to improve it to the point that you will actually want to take the time to print it! Allow about one full workday to print it as the outer ring gear and base take a few hours each. The little gears print quickly by comparison.

I'm sending a physical print of this one in blue (see photo) to my niece Ava - I hope she likes it!

The only duplicate is gear2.stl, print six of those. Everything else (gear1.stl, gear3.stl, and base.stl) print at just one item. Then just drop the gears into place. Makes a good puzzle for little ones - be sure to supervise!

I just want to send out some happy thoughts and thank-you well wishes to all who have printed and shared this design, AVA's Gear Toy 2. It's been featured on a couple or few maybe YouTube shows and the Made photos look fabulous. If you shrink it down it seems to work as one person mentioned, and going large will likely work too.

If you want to go nano with it then try a smaller nozzle to make sure clearances are OK. Same for the other direction, use a bigger nozzle if you scale it up to keep the print times from going astronomical. Remember the base is the largest diameter of all the parts.

As for improvements I have made some glue-on caps for optionally holding the gears in place with super glue or the glue of your choice. I will upload those next. Also I am working on a print-in-place version that you print upside-down. It's smaller and kind of rough and tumble at the moment, so I'll not release it. Hmmm maybe a good thing to work on today!

I've been playing with these gear toys and the more they spin, the more plastic specs and fibers land on my dark shirt, leaving them operating smoothly. also they make a maracas sound so perhaps there will be no need for a chamber with dried beans or some such stuff in it to get a sound....
